Efficient performance and long life of the roller bearing depend to a large extent upon the exclusion of foreign matter from the internal bearing surfaces. Grease, or oil, serves the dual purpose of lubricating these surfaces and protecting them from corrosion. Thus the seal must prevent dust, grit and moisture from entering the bearing and at the same time prevent grease or oil from escaping.

Seal Types

Seal Types

Cooper offers a wide range of standard seals to suit the working conditions of a vast number in all major industries.
Sealing options are shown below, together with descriptions and application parameters. For special applications or working conditions, other materials may be used instead or sealing solutions suggested. These include adaptations or combinations of standard seals or bespoke sealing arrangements.

Seal Selection

Your choice of sealing solution depends on many factors including shaft speed, temperature, the type of operating environment (e.g. wet), and the surrounding atmosphere (e.g. corrosive or explosive).
In situations where shafts terminate at bearings, blanking plates may be used to replace seals at one end of the cartridge.
To find the best seal type for your application, follow the flow chart below. There is also a number of alternative options available including special seals.
